This fine original pencil portrait is neatly inscribed in blue ink “To H.E.Muller / Sincerely. / Marion Davies” in a blank area below the portrait.
It is also signed and dated “3.3.34” by the skilled portrait artist H. E. Muller.
This is one of ten 'signed' beautifully executed Muller portraits of Hollywood legends being offered in this website. (See all 10 signed portraits)
Eight are 8.5” x 11” and two are slightly smaller. In matching frames they would make an impressive display in a business, office or home.
Although Marion Davies made many movies from 1917 to 1937, she is best remembered as William Randolph Hearst's mistress. Hearst reportedly wanted to marry her, but his wife refused a divorce and the Hearst-Davies liaisons continued on without the formality of marriage.
In return, using his personal influence, wealth and, most importantly, the power of his newspaper empire, Hearst made Davies into a major screen personality and a very wealthy woman.
Marion had excellent musical skills and a knack for comic routines but she was only an average dramatic actress and never came close to being the great actress that the Hearst newspapers claimed she was.
After Hearst died in 1951, Marion re-married and spent her time managing her very large financial holdings and the charitable Marion Davies Children’s Clinic. Marion was very much loved and popular among her friends and by Hollywood in general.
The paper size is 8.5” x 11”. Some marginal darkening from pencil smudges, but is in otherwise fine condition.
